AVIATION ART By Thijs Postma, The Netherlands

画家であり、作家そして写真家でもあるタイス・ポストマ(Thijs Postma)氏は今年で87歳になる。　KLMをはじめ多くの航空会社のポスターやレベル、モノグラム、マッチボックスなどプラステｲックモデルの「ボックス・アート」を長年にわたり提供しており、日本でも目にした方は多いはずと思う。彼の絵画は常にドラマチックでかつ、細部まで拘った描写で世界の多くのファンを魅了してきた。今年3月には、「Aviation Art(蘭語：Luchtvaartkunst)」が出版され、386ページに580点に及ぶ航空芸術は「本の展覧会」と言われ、彼の集大成でもある。「オランダ航空絵画の巨匠」そんな彼とインタビューする機会に恵まれた。

航空機少年から航空機イラストレーターへ

第二次世界対戦中の戦闘機を見て、航空機のフォルムの美しさに魅了された少年時代を過ごし、14歳（1948年）の時に飛行機の切り抜きや写真の収拾を始める。広告代理店での経験を活かし、24歳（1958年）でデザイナー兼、イラストレーターとして独立し、同年５月にパイロットであったヨハン・マーティン・シュレーダー（J. Martin Schröder）がマーティンエアーチャーター（Martin's Air Charter ）を設立したのを契機に、自ら宣伝用のプランを持ち込み、最初は会社案内の表紙デザインの仕事を獲得。その後、同社のロゴのデザイン、そして最終的には機体の塗装までをプロデュースすることになり、若きイラストレーターは業界紙でも取り上げられるようになる。

10年後の34歳（1968年）の時には、オランダの航空のパイオニアでもありトランサヴィア航空(Transavia Airlines)の創設者ジョン・ニコラス・ブロック(John Nicolaas Block)の依頼で当時３機保有していたDC-6Bの機体デザインを担当。まさにオランダにおける「航空機イラストレーター」の地位を確立する。

航空画家としてのこだわり

航空機を表現する手法として彼が選んだのは「水彩画」であった。水彩画の利点はすぐに乾くことで作業の進行が早く進められること。また航空機の画像は非常に細かく繊細であり、アンテナどの突起物も正確に描くことが必要となる。この繊細さに目をつけた新たなクライアントがプラモデル会社であり、以降、長年にわたり大手プラモデル会社のパッケージ絵を担当することになる。クライアントであるプラモデル会社が一番注目したのが、パッケージに描かれる航空機はもちろんのこと、彼は背景に見える建物や、他機種の航空機につても正確に描写していることであった。また、航空機を描くには、出来るだけ航空機の設計図を取りよせ、また、小さい時から収集していた当時の航空機の写真が大いに役立ったと語っている。

航空史家としての見識も深く今まで発行した航空書籍や絵画本は27冊におよび、彼の作品はオランダ（ニューヴェネップ）、フランス（ランス）、ベルギー（ブリュッセル）、米国（ロサンゼルス）などで展示されている。

AVIATION ART Master of Dutch aviation painting Mr. Thijs Postma, a painter, writer, and photographer, has drawn pictures of many airlines including Martinair and KLM. Also, it was the plastic model industry that noticed the delicacy of his watercolor paintings, and he has also worked on box art such as levels, monograms, matchboxes for many years, so many people have seen it in Japanese well. His work has always been dramatic and has captivated many aviation fans with its meticulous depictions. When he made his work, he even took the blueprints and used them together with many aircraft photographs he had collected since he was a boy. His culmination of aviation art is his new work "Aviation Art" published in March this year in the Netherlands, which can be called an exhibition of 580 fine pictures. 60 years of illustrious career A boyhood fascinated by the beauty of the aircraft's form. It was at the age of 24 that he became independent as a designer and illustrator. With the establishment of Martinair Charter in 1958, he brought in a promotional plan and produced everything from the cover design of the company profile to the company's logo and finally the

painting of the aircraft. At the age of 34, he was a pioneer of Dutch aviation and was in charge of the design of the DC-6B at the request of Transavia Airlines founder John Nicholas Brock. In addition, he has deep insight as an aviation historian, and has published 27 aviation books and painting books, and it exhibit his fine art including the Netherlands (Nieuw-Vennep), France (Reims), Belgium (Brussels), and the United States (Los Angeles).
